Putin humiliated as huge fire erupts at military airfield just outside Moscow

Vladimir Putin has been dealt another blow after a military airfield in the Moscow oblast was the scene of a huge fire on Wednesday.
Images shared online showed black smoke billowing above the airfield in Chkalovsky, just days after he was rattled by a deadly fireball and his tanks exploded into flames.
The airfield is located in the city of Shchelkovo, 20 miles northeast of Moscow’s city centre.

Footage showed a helicopter being deployed to frantically try and put out the flames.
According to Russian-language Telegram channel 112, the fire spread over 8,600 square feet having started on the airfield’s roof.
Shchelkovo city officials told news outlet MSK1 that the cause of the fire was “a short circuit in the headquarters building”.
Supporters of Ukraine mocked Russia after news of the fire was made public.
Jay In Kyiv posted: “Building on the territory of the Chkalovsky military airfield is on fire in the Moscow region of Russia. Careless smokers??”
The Chkalovsky airfield has been targeted by Ukrainian forces in the past, according to Russian sources, although there is so far no indication that the fire was a result of a strike from Kyiv.
A similar incident occurred in September 2023 when a fire broke out in Shchelkovo just days after Ukrainian intelligence claimed that saboteurs had destroyed three aircraft.

Ukraine and Russia have also carried out strikes on each other’s oil refineries and other energy infrastructure.
As fighting in Ukraine continues, Volodymyr Zelensky has presented a “victory plan” which he says will see Kyiv defeat Moscow in the war.
He told Ukrainian MPs: “Together with our partners, we must change the circumstances so that the war ends. Regardless of what Putin wants. We must all change the circumstances so that Russia is forced to peace.”
